Afghan update - Mountain Gun and infantry movement trays

Over the weekend I did some small additions for my Afghan project.

First of all I painted Afghan tribesmen with mountain gun from Perry Miniatures (VLW 8).

Secondly I did movement trays for the recently finished first box of the tribesmen. As I initially put them on single 25mm bases to use for skirmish games, I made the trays  to suit Black Powder (well actually Black Grom Studio did according to my idea). 

Because I want to field them as small units, I did the frontage of 15cm with rather loose formation. They take a bit of space, but I think they will look good on the table.

Now for a change I started to paint some Union minis for my ACW project, and then come back to the Afghans, as their cavalry dropped in my mail box... 

No I'm not addicted ;-)

W weekend dorobiłem kilka drobnych dodatków do mojego afgańskiego projektu.

Po pierwsze pomalowałem afgańską armatę górską od Perry Miniatures (VLW 8).

Po drugie, zrobiłem treje do niedawno ukończonego pierwszego pudełka "Afghan Tribesmen". Pod skirmishe umieściłem figurki na pojedynczych podstawkach 25mm, ale zrobiłem (produkcja Black Grom Studio wg mojego projektu) treje tak, aby pasowały też do Black Powdera. 

Ponieważ chcę je wystawić jako małe jednostki, zrobiłem front na 15 cm z dość luźno rozstawionymi figurkami. Zajmują trochę miejsca, ale myślę, że będą dobrze wyglądać na stole.

Teraz dla odmiany zacząłem malować figurki Unii do mojego projektu ACW, a potem wracam do Afgańczyków, bo ich kawalerię wyciągnąłem właśnie ze  skrzynki pocztowej... 

Nie, nie jestem uzależniony ;-)

Afghan Tribesmen - 3rd unit and first box finished

 Hello!

Yesterday I finished the third unit of Afghans, and with it, the first box of the Perry Afghan Tribesmen.

I must say I like how they look in group. Today, I'm going to pickup some trays to use them also for Black Powder.

The mountain gun will come next on the workbench, and then perhaps some Austrians or Union soldiers for a change.

The autumn brought a good painting mood!

Wczoraj skończyłem trzeci oddział Afgańczyków, a wraz z nią pierwsze pudełko od Perry Miniatures.

Muszę powiedzieć, że podoba mi się jak wyglądają jako całość. Dzisiaj mam odebrać kilka trejów, aby użyć ich również do Black Powdera.

Następna na warsztacie będzie armata górska, a potem być może dla odmiany jacyś Austriacy lub żołnierze Unii.

Jesień przyniosła "malarską fazę"!

Afghan Tribesmen - 2nd unit

 Hello!

I completed the second unit of the Afghans! Another set of 12 tribesmen is being assembled, and once I paint it will complete the first box. Once I finish with the first box I will probably do the mountain gun, and await the arrival of the Afghan cavalry that I ordered, and probably paint some of the Austrians for a change.

Meanwhile I ordered two books about the period - Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan, 1839-42 by William Dalrymple, and Great Game by Peter Hopkirk. Lots of pages to read but a fascinating story, and from my point very interesting to read about the role of Jan Prosper Witkiewicz, or Iwan Witkiewicz, as I'm friend with the relative of this double agent :-)

Skończyłem drugi oddział Afgańczyków! Kolejny jest w trakcie składania, a kiedy go pomaluję, ukończę pierwsze pudełko z trzech. Następnie prawdopodobnie zrobię armatę górską i będę czekał na przybycie zamówionej przeze mnie kawalerii afgańskiej i prawdopodobnie dla małej odmiany pomaluję coś do Austriaków.

W międzyczasie zamówiłem dwie książki o tym okresie - Powrót Króla - Bitwa o Afganistan, 1839-42  Williama Dalrymple'a i Wielką Grę autorstwa Petera Hopkirka. Wiele stron do przeczytania, ale jest to fascynująca historia, a szczególnie ze względu na rolę Jana Prospera Witkiewicza, czy Iwana Witkiewicza, jako, że przyjaźnię się z krewnym tego podwójnego agenta :-)

Afghan Tribesmen - start of new project

 Hello again!

As if I didn't have enough projects on my workbench I started with another one, and I must say I got so hooked, that at the moment I put all other projects aside.

Just before my birthday I pre-ordered the new plastic Afghan Tribesmen 1800-1900 deal from Perry Miniatures along with the limited Malalai of Maiwand, Afghan high command, and a mountain gun.

Initially I planned to do it at a skirmish level with the Osprey Publishing's "The Men Who Would be Kings" ruleset, but I plan to expand it to the Black Powder level.

To do so, I started basing the minis on single round bases, and had my friend Gonzo from Black Grom Studio make me some movement trays. I went for 15x12cm trays for 12 minis each, as I plan to field them in little ununiformed mobs as small units. One day I will add some regulars, but these will be formed in ranks.

I must say, this is my first approach to colonial warefare (except of some Zulus that I painted few years ago), but it got me very interested in the period! I guess I will do the British one day as well, and maybe even jump to Africa for the Mahdist revolt (I guess I could use the same trays for the Mahdists then)?

I quickly assembled and painted the first unit, and am already working on the second one.

Taking into account the covid cases are increasing in Poland and I guess soon we will be under lockdown again, that will give me more time to paint in the evenings...

Jak gdybym nie miał wystarczająco dużo projektów na warsztacie, zacząłem kolejny i muszę powiedzieć, że tak mnie to wciągnęło, że w tej chwili wszystkie inne projekty odłożyłem na bok.

Tuż przed moimi urodzinami zamówiłem w przedsprzedaży nową plastikowe plastiki od Perry Miniatures - Afghan Tribesmen 1800-1900 wraz z limitowaną Malalai z Maiwand, dowództwem afgańskim i górską armatą.

Początkowo planowałem ich zrobić pod skirmish i grać według zasad „The Men Who were Kings” wydawnictwa Osprey, ale planuję rozszerzyć ich też do poziomu Black Powdera.

Aby to zrobić, zacząłem podstawkować figurki na pojedynczych okrągłych podstawkach, a mój kumpel Gonzo z Black Grom Studio zaprojektował i wykona mi kilka trejów. Wybrałem treje o wymiarze 15x12cm po 12 figurek każdy, ponieważ planuję ustawiać je w małych, niejednorodnych mobach jako małe jednostki. Pewnego dnia dodam kilka oddziałów regularnej armii, ale te będą ustawione w równych formacjach.

Muszę powiedzieć, że jest to moje pierwsze podejście do kolonialnego wargamingu (z wyjątkiem kilku Zulusów, których pomalowałem parę lat temu), ale bardzo zainteresował mnie ten okres! Myślę, że pewnego dnia dorobię też Brytyjczykami, a może nawet skoczę do Afryki i zrobię powstanie Mahdiego (mógłbym w sumie użyć tych samych trejów dla Mahdystów)?

Pierwsze oddział szybko posklejałem i pomalowałem, a nad drugim już pracuję.

Biorąc pod uwagę, że liczba przypadków koronawirusa w Polsce rośnie i myślę, że niedługo znów znów będziemy mieli "lockdown", to będę miał więcej czasu na malowanie wieczorami ...

Black Seas - start of the Spanish fleet

 Hello,

As if I didn't have enough projects on my workbench I started a new one...

Some time ago I read good reviews of the new game from Warlord Games - the Black Seas.

As the friends from my gaming club started with their small fleets, I couldn't resist myself and bought the Spanish Navy Fleet box set and some accompanying books. 

I must say the quality of the model casts is great! I quickly assembled the ships, primed them with Corax White undercoat, and quicky airbrushed the decks with "Wood", and the broadsides, and parts of the masts with Bloody Red from Vallejo Model Air paint range. I decided to follow the Warlord Games' reccomendations for painting the sides red, despite the fact that from what I read these were painted like that not so often, but I want thhe ships to be clearly distinguished fromy my friend's French and British vessels.

So far I'm really excited about this little side project. The only thing that scares me a bit is rigging the ships with the string, but I've heard it is not so difficult. I hope to paint some of these over the weekend!

Jakbym nie miał wystarczająco dużo projektów na warsztacie, ruszyłem z nowym ...

Jakiś czas temu przeczytałem dobre recenzje nowej gry od Warlord Games - The Black Seas.

Ponieważ przyjaciele z mojego klubu już zaczęli skłądać swoje floty, nie mogłem się oprzeć i kupiłem zestaw Spanish Navy Fleet i kilka towarzyszących mu książek.

Muszę powiedzieć, że jakość odlewów modeli jest świetna! Szybko zmontowałem statki, zagruntowałem je podkładem Corax White i z grubsza psiknąłem pokłady farbą „Wood”, a burty i elementy masztów Bloody Red z serii farb Vallejo Model Air. Postanowiłem postępować zgodnie z zaleceniami Warlord Games co do pomalowania burt na czerwono, mimo że z tego, co czytałem, malowano je tak rzadko, ale chcę, aby statki wyraźnie odróżniały się od statków francuskich i brytyjskich moich kolegów.

Jak narazie jestem bardzo nakręcony tym  pobocznym projektem. Jedyne, co mnie trochę przeraża, to takielunek statków sznurkiem, ale słyszałem, że w brew pozorom nie jest to takie trudne. Mam nadzieję, że niektóre z nich podmaluję jeszcze w ten w weekend!

Jan's Games Day 2020

 Hello,

Again a few weeks break since the last post, but after the Covid thing I was really busy returning to normal life.

Since I turned 40 two weeks ago, this weekend I held my wargaming party (gaming, eating and drinking fest). Throughout most of the day, with my wargaming and re-enactment friends, we played a big game of ECW with Pike & Shotte rules, with 22 brigades and over 1100 figure on the 6' x 12' table. We had four players per side. The game went pretty smooth with breaks for barbecue and drink. 

The game finished with the Royalist victory over the Parliment and Convenanters! 

Once finished we changed the setup of the tables, and had a game of Bolt Action on one , and Blood Bowl (two gaming fields) on the other one. I took lots of photos of the P&S game, but not many of the Bolt action and BB.

From my friends I recieved great birthday gifts - beautiful knife made by Trollsky Custom Knives (www.trollsky.com), and a mini model of a Austro Hungarian ship from the WW1 (same class that my great grandfather served on during the war).

Now... I will flood you with the photos!

Znowu kilka tygodni przerwy od ostatniego wpisu, ale po koronawirusie byłem naprawdę zajęty powrotem do normalnego życia.

Ponieważ dwa tygodnie temu skończyłem 40 lat, w ten weekend zorganizowałem imprezę z grami bitewnymi (granie, jedzenie i picie). Przez większość dnia, graliśmy z kolegami z klubu w Angielską Wojnę Domową na zasadach Pike & Shotte, z 22 brygadami i ponad 1100 figurkami na stole 6 'x 12'. Mieliśmy po czterech graczy na stronę. Gra poszła całkiem gładko z przerwami na grilla i drinka.

Gra zakończyła się zwycięstwem rojalistów nad Parlamentem i sprzymierzonymi Szkotami!

Gdy skończyliśmy, zmieniliśmy ustawienia stołów i graliśmy w Bolt Action na jednym, a Blood Bowl (dwa pola gry) na drugim. Zrobiłem wiele zdjęć rozgrywki w P&S, ale niewiele z gier w Bolta i BB.

Od przyjaciół otrzymałem wspaniałe prezenty urodzinowe - piękny nóż wykonany przez Trollsky Custom Knives (www.trollsky.com) oraz mini model austro-węgierskiego statku z I wojny światowej (tej samej klasy, na której służył mój pradziadek podczas wojny).
